General Summary
This position assists in building valued financial relationships with our members by helping them manage their delinquent accounts while providing outstanding professional service. The Collections Specialist is responsible for managing late or delinquent loan accounts, negative checking accounts, returned checks, and pending past due payment reminders. This role involves follow-up communications with members, maintaining accurate records, and finding resolutions that balance the goodwill of members with the credit union’s business interests.Essential Functions
Monitor payments for late or delinquent status and follow up via telephone, mail, text, or email.
Contact high-balance or delinquent members to determine reasons for delinquency and develop repayment plans.
Notify co-signers regarding delinquent accounts.
Maintain detailed written records of all communications related to delinquencies.
Update member files and the credit union’s delinquent loan system.
Maintain accurate data for repossessions, bankruptcies, charge-offs, and related files.
Assist members with delinquent real-estate loans in resolving delinquencies.
Determine when to settle balances or initiate foreclosure/repossession proceedings.
Work with attorneys and agencies on repossessions and legal actions as needed.
Process payments from attorneys and bankruptcy courts.
Prepare delinquent loans, credit cards, NSF checks, and checking accounts for charge-off.
Collect negative balances and returned items, referring to authorities when necessary.
Coordinate with attorneys and trustees on bankruptcy filings and attend hearings.
Ensure the workspace is organized and properly stocked with necessary materials.
Maintain strict confidentiality regarding all member and employee-related business.
Foster a positive and personable environment for member and employee interactions.
Additional Functions
Attend meetings, training courses, conferences, and seminars.
Prepare monthly and quarterly reports for the CLO, CEO, or Board of Directors.
Upload daily files for mailing delinquency letters.
Job Specifications
High school diploma or equivalent required.
1-3 years of related experience in collections and bankruptcy or equivalent education/training.
Strong knowledge of credit union products and services.
Proficiency with computers, calculators, and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
Strong problem-solving, communication, and customer service skills.
Patience and effective listening skills.
Intermediate mathematical skills, including basic calculations using fractions and decimals.
Professional demeanor and high level of confidentiality.
Physical Demands
Ability to sit, talk, hear, and speak for extended periods.
Sedentary work in an office environment, with the ability to move about inside the office.
Use of standard office equipment such as computers, calculators, filing cabinets, and copiers.
